Haniel (天使様 (ハニエル) , Hanieru^?) is a fictional character featured in the Mandate of Heaven manga series where she first appears on Volume 13 of the said manga. She is cosplayed by Marin Kitagawa.

While her role in the series is only short, her impact on the story is significant. She was featured on the cover art at the back of Volume 13, and readers who saw the art were drawn to buy the manga. While there are other protagonists in the story, her character is considered one of if not the most iconic in the series.

Appearance

Haniel is an archangel who possesses an otherworldly beauty which is said to enchant those who lay eyes on her. She has gray hair, bluish silver eyes, and red lips. When she became one with a demon, she tore off her wings and her white nails and longed for black wings and black nails, as the white symbolized her obedience to God. Instead of the black wings of a demon that she longed for, she wears a black haori as "proof of her love." Her upper torso does not have any flesh or skin and only her ribcage is visible.

It is also mentioned that two giant white fish spin around the air nearby to protect her.

Personality

Haniel longs for the Devil's love and has grown to hate the attributes that make her into an angel, such as her white wings. While Haniel despises humans, those who see her immediately fall in love with her beauty. She lures them in before eliminating them.

Plot

As described by Kougami, her story is basically of one who has developed a one-sided love with the Devil. At some point in the story, she becomes one with the Devil, and chose to fall from heaven. She ripped out her wings and her white nails, since she thought white symbolized her obedience to God. After that, she longed for black wings and nails, but knew she could never grow them. While she hates God, she doesn't go against His mandate to rid the Earth of all humans. In fact, she lures them with her beauty before she turns them into blobs of flesh and blood. It is unclear what happens to her in the series, but she only appears in Volume 13 of the manga.

Etymology

• The name Haniel when written in kanji means "angel" (天使様) (tenshi-sama).
