Background[]
In the mystery horror game, Coffin, nuns in a convent keep getting killed one after another. The question is, who is doing it?[2]
It is a novel-visual game which unfolds from the point-of-view of the game's protagonist, Mira. At first, the game shows the nun's duties and everyday life, such as them eating together everyday.
Wakana's first impression of Coffin was that it was a quiet game instead of a horror game. As he describes it, the nuns aren't related by blood, but they strengthen their "family ties" by supporting each other and spending time together. The regular daily routine makes the game seem peaceful.[3]
As the player reaches near the end of the game, the dialogue becomes harsh and the characters' conversations don't quite mesh. Eventually all the player's saves are removed forcing them to continue on with the game.[4]
In the end, it is revealed that Mira, the main character, killed everyone, or rather, the players discover that the other characters don't actually exist. Mira invented a new family for herself in an attempt to overwrite her painful real-life backstory, which is that she was bedridden the whole time. The reason the conversations no longer meshed together was to reflect Mira's mental state. Also, the deleted save points were to show that Mira didn't want to remember her past.
The characters started to argue more and more and then stopped doing things together unlike in the beginning where they spend everyday doing their nun duties and such. In the end, the characters became dinner one after the other because Mira thinks that if you take your family into yourself and become one, they won't leave you.[5]
